How to write a dedication

  • ✦ Length: two to four sentences. Anything more belongs in a card or a letter.
  • ✦ Tone: the one you use every day with this person. If you tease each other, the dedication can tease too.
  • ✦ One detail: a place, a sentence, an object only the two of you will recognize. It sets your dedication apart from every other.
  • ✦ A date or not: yes for an anniversary, a birth, a wedding or a farewell. For a "just because" gift, the place and the season are enough.
