Wedding anniversary gifts by year: the traditional list, milestone by milestone
Every wedding anniversary has a traditional gift: paper for the first year, wood for the fifth, silver for the twenty-fifth, gold for the fiftieth. Here is the traditional list from year 1 to 70, what the big milestones mean, and for each one what a book of your story can tell.

The traditional anniversary list, year by year
This is the traditional list used in the United States, as recorded in the Wedding anniversary article on Wikipedia. The UK list differs on a few years (cotton or paper for year 1, linen for year 4, sugar for year 6). After year 15, tradition only names every fifth year.

|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Paper | 2 | Cotton |
| 3 | Leather | 4 | Fruit and flowers |
| 5 | Wood | 6 | Iron |
| 7 | Wool, copper | 8 | Bronze |
| 9 | Pottery | 10 | Tin, aluminum |
| 11 | Steel | 12 | Silk |
| 13 | Lace | 14 | Ivory |
| 15 | Crystal | 20 | China |
| 25 | Silver | 30 | Pearl |
| 35 | Coral | 40 | Ruby |
| 45 | Sapphire | 50 | Gold |
| 55 | Emerald | 60 | Diamond |

Celebrating with a French-speaking partner? Their list is different: in France the first year is cotton and the 40th is emerald, not ruby.
1 year: paper
Paper is where a story gets written, which suits a couple at the start. It is the year of official firsts: the first holidays as a married couple, the first joint tax return.
What the book can tell: how you met, the proposal, the wedding planning and the day itself, from the best man's speech to the last dance. A book is also, quite literally, a paper gift.

5 years: wood
Wood stands for roots taking hold. By five years, a couple has often moved, sometimes grown into a family, and been through its first real trials.
What the book can tell: the first home together, the honeymoon, the storm you weathered and how you came out of it.
10 years: tin
Tin bends without breaking. Ten years is the first round number, the one where you measure the road behind you.
What the book can tell: from the day you met to the first apartment, then to the home you have today. Ten years fit into five or six well-chosen scenes: our guide what to write in a couple book helps you pick them.
15 years: crystal
Crystal is clear and rings when you tap it. After fifteen years, you know each other by heart and understand each other without a word.
What the book can tell: everyday rituals, inside jokes, nicknames, everything that can't be seen from outside and makes you a couple.
20 years: china
China is delicate but fired at very high heat. Twenty years of marriage often means grown children and a couple finding each other again.
What the book can tell: the family years, holidays in the same place, the moment the house went quiet again. Your children can be mentioned in the story; the two drawn heroes stay the two of you.
25 years: silver
The first precious metal on the list, and one of the most celebrated anniversaries. There is often a party, sometimes a trip, sometimes a vow renewal.
What the book can tell: a quarter century in eight scenes, from the day you met to the anniversary trip. The couple can give it to themselves, or the children to their parents.
30 years: pearl
A pearl forms slowly, layer by layer. Thirty years is a story that has crossed several eras.
What the book can tell: the 90s when you met, the fashions, the first cars, and what never changed between you despite everything else.
40 years: ruby
Ruby is a deep red stone, the color of a love that has lasted. Forty years of marriage is often the age of grandchildren.
What the book can tell: your story, so the grandchildren know it: how Grandpa met Grandma, the dance, the letter, the first house.
50 years: gold
The most famous milestone, and a party that often brings the whole family together. It is also when children look for a gift worthy of fifty years together.
What the book can tell: half a century, from the day they met to today. The book is easy to prepare as a family: everyone brings a memory, and you keep the strongest.
60 years: diamond
Diamond, the hardest stone, for a couple nothing has parted in sixty years. A rare celebration, often an intimate one.
What the book can tell: a couple's memory, passed on: places that no longer exist, jobs from another time, the sayings the whole family repeats.
Making an anniversary book: who gives it, and how
Between spouses. The most common case. One of you makes the book in secret, with a photo of the other, and tells the story from your side. The surprise holds until the day, and the story says what you haven't always said out loud.
From the children. For silver, gold or diamond anniversaries, the children often give it. They gather the memories: the meeting as their parents tell it, the wedding photos, childhood holidays. The two drawn heroes are then the parents, and the children appear in the story.
Together. Some couples make it together, one evening, for their own anniversary. Each brings their memories, and sometimes you have to settle between two versions of the same story.
Either way, the method is the same: start with how you met, pick four to six moments, and for each keep one precise detail rather than an adjective. A place, a sentence, an object. That is what makes you say "that's us" when you open the book.
